The Trump administration’s plan to cut $900 million from the Department of Education’s research arm is a dangerous decision that will close pathways to opportunity for millions of Americans

February 12, 2025 –– Dr. Andrea Abrams, executive director of the Defending American Values Coalition, a member of the American Pride Rises Network, issued the following statement in response to reports on the Trump administration’s decision to cut $900 million from the Department of Education’s research arm:

“The effort to undermine the Department of Education and its research arm are reckless and shortsighted attempts to strip millions of Americans of their fundamental right to a quality education. This decision is not about efficiency or government overreach; it is about deliberately removing access to opportunity, stifling economic mobility, and maintaining a system where power and privilege remain concentrated in the hands of a select few. Access to education for the poor, those with learning differences and other marginalized children is an essential promise of diversity, equity and inclusion – one of the ways DEI guarantees possibilities for all.

“Education is the cornerstone of our democracy and our economy and a key pathway to the American Dream. By gutting the very institution responsible for ensuring equal access to education, the Trump administration is signaling its intent to close pathways to opportunity for millions of Americans – threatening our nation’s workforce, global competitiveness and the futures of our children.

“This attack on education is yet another example of an administration willing to sacrifice the future of working families to satiate the desires of extremist ideologies committed to undermining core American values.”
