This week, Lowe’s and Ford caved to the demands of right-wing, anti-DEI activists by retreating from the fundamental American values of diversity, equity and inclusion. In response, we are issuing the following statement:
“Lowe’s and Ford join a concerning list of companies that have previously made significant diversity, equity and inclusion commitments, only to back away from these values due to pressure from cynical right-wing reactionaries. These self-avowed DEI opponents want to limit access to opportunity for millions of Americans,” said Dr. Andrea Abrams, Executive Director of Defending American Values Coalition, a member of the American Pride Rises Network. “Opponents of DEI seek to dismantle initiatives because they work. Rather than bowing to the pressures of anti-DEI activists, companies should speak up about the economic successes of DEI and stand firm in their support for programs that increase the talent pool and expand the bottom line. By capitulating, they only embolden the behavior of politically motivated actors determined to restore barriers to the American Dream and undo centuries of progress in our nation.”
