January 7, 2025 –– Dr. Andrea Abrams, executive director of American Pride Rises, issued the following statement in response to McDonald’s ending some of its diversity, equity and inclusion policies:
“McDonald’s is joining a small but concerning list of companies that once touted the importance of diversity, equity and inclusion, but have now abandoned their values and capitulated to right-wing activists and politicians working to restrict all people in our nation from being able to achieve their American Dream.
“Diversity, equity and inclusion are not symbolic gestures that can be picked up and discarded depending on political headwinds. These are fundamental American values that undergird our economy and have a direct impact on the bottom line for companies. It is well documented that when companies invest in DEI, they make better business decisions, have stronger financial outcomes and build a better talent pipeline.
“By reversing any of its DEI programs, McDonald’s now risks losing talent because they may not feel seen and supported in their role, or struggling to attract and retain new, diverse talent now that its true priorities are clear.
“Even as the political and legal landscape for DEI evolves, corporations should follow the lead of companies like Costco that stand firm in its commitment to DEI. Companies that put DEI at the forefront understand that integrity is vital to driving innovation and success.
“If McDonald’s and other corporations are truly committed to building diverse, equitable and inclusive companies, they’ll stand firm in their principles and not abandon them when politically expedient.”
